CURRICULUM VITAE

Dr. Károly Szász serves his second term as the president of the Hungarian Financial Supervisory Authority (HFSA) since 1 July 2010. Previously he had held this position between 2000 and 2004 having been the first president of the HFSA a fully integrated supervisory authority of all financial services and markets.

  • 1981: Mr Szász graduated from the University of Economics of Budapest.  
  • 1986: Mr. Szász wrote his doctoral dissertation on the monetary policy of the United States upon which the same university granted his Doctoral Degree.
  • 1981-1984: Trader at Tesco Foreign Trade Company.
  • 1984-1995: Mr Szász entered the financial sector by joining the Central-European International Bank (CIB) a unique at that time joint venture of several leading Western European and Japanese banks and the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (National Bank of Hungary) providing sophisticated services to its international clientele. He had the opportunity to gain experience in all segments of banking by spending eleven years in the bank. During his career at the bank he was first involved in the area of economics, then worked in the various transaction departments of the bank. Later on he became the regional relationship manager of the international banking relations unit. Following this he was appointed to the head of the first branch of the bank, located in Győr, an important industrial and commercial centre close both to Austria and Slovakia. After that he became the head of the corporate finance department.
  • 1995: Dr. Szász had been appointed as director of the Corporate Directorate of the Hungarian Foreign Trade Bank and a member of the Board of the bank. His responsibilities included, among others, corporate financing, risk analysis, product development, financing of SMEs, and branch coordination.
  • 1996 and 1997: Dr Szász had similar responsibilities again at CIB.
  • 1998: Co-CEO in charge of corporate financing and a Board member of HypoVereinsbank Hungaria Rt.
  • 1999-2000: CEO of Konzumbank.
  • 2000-2004: President of the newly established HFSA responsible for the supervision of credit institutions, financial, insurance, investment service providers, and markets as well as consumer protection in the financial sector.
  • 2000 and 2001: Chairman of the Board of Directors at the National Deposit Insurance Fund of Hungary.
  • 2004: OTP as chief advisor to the President of the bank.  
  • 2006: CEO of OTP Banka Srbija. As of the end of 2008 the bank had already more than 300.000 customers and nearly 100 branches.
  • 2008: OTP Bank, chief advisor to the President.
  • July 1 2010: The President of the Republic appointed Dr. Károly Szász for the second time to the President of the HFSA for a six year term.
  • January 2011: European Banking Authority Managing Board, member; Supervisory Boards of the European supervisory authorities (EBA, ESMA, EIOPA), member; European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB) General Board, member

He is fully proficient in English, German and Russian.

He is married with four children.
